Published by the Montana Historical Society since 1951, Montana The Magazine of Western History contains articles that showcase the people, places, and events that shaped the state and the western region.

The peer-reviewed quarterly is a leading source for scholarship on the American West and is both Montana's journal of record and an official journal of the Western History Association. The journal is a vital research tool for professional and avocational historians. The magazine also features book reviews and commentaries.

Montana's goal is to appeal to both scholarly and popular audiences. Over the years, the journal has looked at the histories of the Pacific Northwest, the Great Plains, the Southwest, Hawaii, and Canada and carried articles on a variety of topics, including Native American history, the Cold War, the environment, women's experiences, labor, frontiers, and national parks.
