Journal Of Veterinary Pharmacology And Therapeutics

(ISSN 1365-2885)

Aims and Scope

The Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics (JVPT) is an international journal devoted to the publication of scientific papers in the basic and clinical aspects of veterinary pharmacology and toxicology, whether the study is in vitro, in vivo, ex vivo or in silico. The Journal is a forum for recent scientific information and developments in the discipline of veterinary pharmacology, including toxicology and therapeutics. Studies that are entirely in vitro will not be considered within the scope of JVPT unless the study has direct relevance to the use of the drug (including toxicants and feed additives) in veterinary species, or that it can be clearly demonstrated that a similar outcome would be expected in vivo. These studies should consider approved or widely used veterinary drugs and/or drugs with broad applicability to veterinary species.

Compounded drugs

Because compounded drugs do not undergo consistent testing for identity, quality, strength, purity and stability, results of research described in reports using compounded products may not be reproducible, which is an accepted standard for peer-reviewed scientific journals. The Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics will generally not consider manuscripts describing results using compounded drugs.

Exceptions may be considered by the journal editors. These may include: evaluation of a compounded formulation in comparison to an approved proprietary product; use of a compounded product because an approved proprietary formulation does not exist, or was necessary because of the exceptional dose requirements for the animals in the study (for example, small exotic animals). In the latter instances, the authors must supply information that the compounded product was tested for identity, quality, strength, and purity (and stability if additional testing is undertaken) and meet compendial standards for compounded products available in the country or region where the study was conducted, for example the United States Pharmacopeia (USP).

The following statement should be included in the manuscript: Because compounded drugs do not undergo consistent testing for identity, quality, strength, purity and stability, results of research described in reports using compounded products may not be reproducible.
