Overview

Transactions of the Philological Society is the oldest scholarly journal devoted to the general study of language and languages that has an unbroken tradition.

It is an International journal publishing evidence-based approaches to all areas of linguistics with a particular focus on the comparative and historical, and inclusive of the widest possible range of languages.

The journal reflects the Philological Society's long-standing interest in comparative and historical linguistics. It also reflects the Society's broad range of interests and welcomes studies of all languages from the perspective of any of the various subdisciplines of descriptive and theoretical linguistics, including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics and sociolinguistics, from both synchronic and diachronic perspectives.

Aims and Scope

Transactions of the Philological Society has appeared since 1854 and continues the earlier Proceedings (1842-53), making it the oldest scholarly journal devoted to the general study of language and languages that has an unbroken tradition. It is published in three issues a year and distributed to all PhilSoc members as part of their subscription package.

TPhS welcomes articles from scholars at any stage of their career which have evidence-based approaches to linguistics. All articles are double-blind peer-reviewed by two or more reviewers. We normally expect to return reviews to authors within 3 months of their first submission.
