Pest Management Science
(ISSN 1526-4998)
Overview
Pest Management Science is the international journal of research and development in crop protection and pest control. Since its launch in 1970, the journal has become the premier forum for papers on the discovery, application, and impact on the environment of products and strategies designed for pest management.
Published for SCI by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
SCI (Society of Chemical Industry) is a unique international forum where science meets business on independent, impartial ground. Anyone can join and current Members include consumers, business people, environmentalists, industrialists, farmers, and researchers. The Society offers a chance to share information between sectors as diverse as food and agriculture, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, materials, chemicals, environmental science and safety. As well as organising educational events, SCI awards a number of prestigious honours and scholarships each year, publishes peer-reviewed journals, and provides Members with news from their sectors in the respected magazine, Chemistry & Industry .
Originally established in London in 1881 and in New York in 1894, SCI is a registered charity with Members in over 70 countries.
Aims and Scope
Topics covered by the journal include:
Applications of biotechnology and molecular biology relevant to pest management
Biological control, biopesticides and integrated pest management (IPM)
Resistance of pests to pest management products and strategies
Synthesis, discovery, screening, structure/activity and biochemical mode of action of insecticides, herbicides, fungicides and other pesticides
Properties and use of new pest management products and strategies
Formulation and application methods for pest management products
Metabolism, degradation, field performance, environmental studies and safety in use of new and existing pest management products
Naturally occurring materials for pest management
Genetic and ecological implications of pest management products and methods
Protection of commodities from pests
Toxicology, risk assessment and regulation of pest management products and methods
Economic impact of pest management products and methods
Pest biology as it relates to pest management
Research papers on products of uncertain chemical composition (e.g. crude extracts, formulations with incomplete chemical descriptions) or unknown or unclear active ingredients are not accepted for review.
We do not invite papers on efficacy comparisons of commercial products, unless the paper goes beyond efficacy comparisons and is of more than local geographic interest.
The journal may publish papers from scientific meetings of the SCI Agrisciences Group and from other selected international conferences.
Review Process
Submitted articles are first screened by the Editor-in-Chief and the Editors to see if they adhere to the Journal’s Aims and Scope, and to assess whether they meet overall quality criteria. If these standards are met, then the Editors will engage the assistance of peer-reviewers to assess the paper’s quality and suitability for publication. Peer-review on PS is ‘single blind’, ensuring that the reviewers’ identities are not revealed to authors (though identities of the authors and institutions are known to reviewers).
After the reviews are received, the editors make the final decision on the suitability of the manuscript. If the paper is deemed suitable with revisions, the authors will be asked to revise the manuscript within 4-8 weeks and the paper may be sent to referees again for a re-review process to ensure their comments were adequately addressed. Once a manuscript is accepted, some minor additional editing may be required from the Publisher prior to publication.
The most common criteria for rejection include: being outside the scope of the journal; unclear chemical composition; poor writing; weak justification for the research; poor experimental design; incomplete or poor descriptions of the experiment, or the measurements undertaken; contradictory, confusing or poor interpretation of the results; or marginal novelty of the research.
The Journal strives to arrive at a decision promptly, but the most usual cause of delays is the availability of expert reviewers. If a lack of reviews is slowing down the process, the authors may be asked to suggest additional reviewers. Authors are encouraged to serve as reviewers on at least three manuscripts for each paper they submit.
